British companies will be forced to publicly disclose data breaches and face fines amounting to tens of millions of pounds after the government cracked down on cyber-security, and said it would take stringent EU legislation on data protection, in spite of the vote to leave the Union. The adoption of these standards and the expansion of Brussels, which is due to come into force in 2018, is a measure is seen as crucial to stay in the single market. EU law, which is called the General Provisions on data protection (GDPR), introduces stricter penalties for companies that suffer data breaches, mandates that they should report when violations occur, and forces them to obtain explicit consent before processing the information of citizens.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has built his own competitor to Amazon's Alexa , and it's running his own home. The system can recognize speech like other smart home devices, but it also uses sophisticated natural language processing that allows it to learn new words and concepts, employ facial recognition and more, Zuckerberg wrote. One thing that really sets Jarvis apart from Amazon's Alexa and Google Home system is the ability communicate with it remotely via text message. Zuckerberg can use the system to dim lights, turn on his home heat and more.

The company said it expects to achieve adjusted earnings for this fiscal year, compared to the previous outlook of breakeven to a loss of five cents.

Robots make better salespeople than humans?

Robots make better salespeople than humans?

They know how to cajole. They know how to pester. They understand your triggers and work them mercilessly until they're elected president.

But are human sales people really all that? I've just set eyes on a study that suggests many salespeople give up far too easily, while their robot counterparts have the persistence that matters.

This seems like a relatively poor showing on behalf of the human race. Either that, or it shows a peculiarly advanced humanity. Why pester people too much? Who wants that?

Conversica wasn't happy. Why might this be? You'll be numbed to your nasal hairs when I tell you Conversica "automates email conversations with all your leads," according to its website. So here are the robot people telling us that robots are better than people.

He explained that humans just don't have it anymore. "People are busy, they're inconsistent, they cherry-pick the leads, they get discouraged, or they just have bad days," he said.

Erich Bloch, who helped develop the IBM mainframe has gone at 91

Erich Bloch, who helped develop the IBM mainframe has gone at 91

Bloch died November 25 in Washington from complications of Alzheimer's disease, his daughter, Rebecca Rosen, told the Washington Post.

The mainframe computers Bloch helped to develop ushered in the modern computing era, providing a cornerstone that allows us to perform a variety of tasks on the internet, including shopping, banking and making airline reservations, among many others.

In the mid-1950s, Bloch contributed to the development of the IBM 7030, a supercomputer popularly known as "Stretch" that could perform 100 billion computations a day and handle half a million instructions per second. It was about 30 to 40 times faster than other systems, but IBM discontinued the Stretch after shipping only nine systems to quell charges that it exerted monopoly control over the computer market.

"The first 30 years of computing is what most of the work going on today is based on," he said. "What you see today is a reflection of the fact those systems we developed were built to be durable and flexible."

After retiring from IBM in 1984, Bloch was appointed director of the National Science Foundationby President Ronald Reagan. During his six-year term, he oversaw the creation of NSFNET, a precursor to the modern internet.

After weaning itself from dependence on Google, the nonprofit plans to expand beyond the Firefox browser.

After weaning itself from dependence on Google, the nonprofit plans to expand beyond the Firefox browser.

If you've heard of Mozilla, it's probably because you've used its Firefox browser. Now the nonprofit wants to expand out of technology into politics.

The organization is funding the efforts with revenue from Firefox searches, which has jumped since 2014 when it switched from a global deal with Google to a set of regional deals. Mozilla brought in $421 million in revenue last year largely through partnerships with Yahoo in the US, Yandex in Russia and Baidu in China, according to tax documents released alongside Mozilla's 2015 annual report on Thursday.

Pushing policy work brings new challenges well beyond traditional Mozilla work competing against Google's Chrome browser and Microsoft's Internet Explorer. They include squaring off against the incoming administration of Donald Trump.

"That's huge for us," Dixon-Thayer said of the Huawei partnership. For carriers and phone makers, Firefox offers a way to loosen Google's technology grip, and she predicted more such deals in 2017.

Paying to attract new users is fine, but it's better for people to come on their own.

"It's incredibly important for us to grow organically, desktop and mobile," Dixon-Thayer said. "Those users tend to stick with you, and they tend to align in terms of values."

Attracting more users is critical to increasing leverage for the Mozilla mission. "We need to see growth to achieve larger constituency power," she said, whether through signing business deals or establishing new web technologies.

For startups, having formal plans to address diversity just isn't a priority.

For startups, having formal plans to address diversity just isn't a priority.

In the past several years, large tech companies including Microsoft, Google, Apple, Facebookand Intel have started releasing regular diversity reports, along with launching a variety of initiatives and partnerships aimed at boosting the numbers of women and minorities in their ranks, particularly in technical roles. In November, Microsoft said it would tie diversity goals to executives' compensations. Companies like Intel are increasingly vocal about improving their numbers.

Also in the report, 50 percent said their ratio of men and women employees was heavily weighted toward men, while 31 percent said their ratio stood around 50:50. Meanwhile, 61 percent said their boards are completely male.

When asked about why women and minorities are underrepresented in tech, male founders tended to see the root of the problem as a pipeline issue, which refers to the idea that there aren't enough women or minorities entering the tech industry. Women mostly pegged the problem to a lack of role models and factors like unconscious bias during hiring and promotions.

Reddit CEO apologizes for altering Trump

Reddit CEO apologizes for altering Trump
Reddit CEO Steve Huffman apologized Wednesdayfor secretly editing comments in a community thread for supporters of President-elect Donald Trump, and vowed to take a tougher stance on some of the site's "toxic users."

His actions were heavily criticized by users as violating a tacit code between the platform and the users.

Over the Thanksgiving weekend, Huffman had explained his actions by citing a "long week here trying to unwind the r/pizzagate stuff," a reference to Reddit's decision to shut down a thread devoted to proving a false news item accusing a Washington D.C. pizzeria of hosting a child-abuse ring run by Hillary Clinton. The pizzeria's owner had reported a surge in online attacks, including death threats, as that false news spread and told the New York Times he was asking Reddit and others to remove the articles.

The apology follows a report from Gizmodo detailing how Reddit has allowed the Trump subreddit to "overrun" the site by failing to enforce its content policies.

"Historically, we have relied on our relationship with moderators to curb bad behaviors," says Huffman. "While some of the moderators have been helpful, this has not been wholly effective, and we are now taking a more proactive approach to policing behavior that is detrimental to Reddit."

1M accounts infected by malware

1M accounts infected by malware

A new variant of a well-known malware program has infected more than one million accounts via phones that run older versions of Google's Android operating system, mostly outside the U.S., a security firm reported Wednesday.

The malware, dubbed Googlian, is delivered via apps downloaded from non-approved, third-party app sites. That's made users outside the U.S., who are more likely to use these sites, more vulnerable. It affects an estimated 1,000 users in the United States.

The malware campaign attacks accounts on phones running the Android 4 and 5 operating systems, known as Jelly Bean, KitKat and Lollipop, and according to Check Point Software Technologies, can potentially access information from users' other Google accounts.

"The best policy for avoiding this type of unfortunate situation is to look at the reputation of the purveyor — buy your Gucci from a Gucci store, get your news from a publication with a reputation at stake and download your apps from certified stores like Google Play," he said.

Google also reminded users of Android phones to keep their devices up to date and thus secure.

Apple using drones to catch Google Maps

Apple using drones to catch Google Maps

Apple Maps has gotten much better since its 2012 launch, but it still isn't quite as built out as Google's rival Google Maps.

Apple, like Google and Microsoft's Bing, currently uses cars equipped with cameras and sensors to travel and record mapping data. By switching to drones the company could conceivably record this data faster and thus more quickly update and improve Maps.

Indoor mapping is another area said to be in the company's sights. This would allow Apple to stay competitive with Google, which has been pursuing a similar idea to allow people to benefit from mapping apps inside venues such as sports arenas, airports and shopping malls. Last year Apple purchased indoor mapping startup Indoor.io, according to Bloomberg, and in 2013 bought a similar company called WiFiSlam.

Apple released an indoor mapping app called Indoor Survey last November that allows registered businesses to use their iPhones to help improve indoor positioning by using WiFi, radio frequencies and sensors such as GPS.

This best Canon camera deal we've seen in years

This best Canon camera deal we've seen in years

Well, as you'd expect with a deal this good, Canon has sold out of its existing stock of the refurbished Rebel SL1. There is good news, though! Canon has refurbished versions of the newer Canon Rebel T5 marked down to $249.99 right now. You'll have to nab it in a separate transaction, but you can then combine that with the refurbished 75-300mm zoom lens for $49.99 and get everything for less than our original deal.

If refurbished isn't your thing then we also recommend this kit at Amazon.com, which includes the newer Canon Rebel T5, the 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III lens, and a camera bag for $449. It's a little more money, but everything with that bundle is brand-new.

While Black Friday and Cyber Monday are behind us, Canon's own store has been saving its best deal for last. For just $309 right now you can get the Canon Rebel SL1 with an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens and the Canon 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III zoom lens.

The total savings here are incredible. The SL1 with just the 18-55mm kit lens retailed for $799.99 when it debuted. It's fallen a bit in price since then, but even now a similar bundle will cost you $499 brand-new at Amazon with a camera bag. If you don't mind a refurb, but don't need the bundle then you can pick up the SL1 for $279.99 on its own while the lens will set you back $49.99 separately.

Erasing GPS Data From Photos

Erasing GPS Data From Photos

When you take a photo, the phone’s camera can record all kinds of technical details about the image, which are stored in the file’s EXIF(Exchangeable Image File Format) data. Along with any location information embedded by a phone or camera, the EXIF data can include a wealth of facts about the image, including the date and time it was taken, the camera’s settings and the model of camera used.

To get started, right-click on one of the picture files you want to scrub and choose Properties from the contextual menu. When the Properties box opens, select the Details tab. At the bottom of the box, click the link for “Remove Properties and Personal Information.” In the Remove Properties box that appears, you can choose to create a copy of the photo that wipes as much information as possible from the file. You can also opt instead to use the original file and delete data selectively.

If you stick with the original file, go down the list of properties in the box and select the information you want to remove from the file. Click the O.K. button when you are finished.

Repeat the process for each photo you want to edit. If you have a large number of pictures to change, third-party EXIF-editing programs may help speed things up. Mac users can find similar software, like Exif Remover and other data-stripping tools available around the web.

Under pressure from investors, Samsung Electronics might restructure its vast operations as a way to unlock shareholder value.

Under pressure from investors, Samsung Electronics might restructure its vast operations as a way to unlock shareholder value. The family-controlled South Korean electronics giant said it would consider creating a holding company and listing its operations on international exchanges. Samsung will begin a review of its options that will take at least six months, it said.

The review comes after an American hedge fund, Elliott Management, called for the company to take steps to bolster its share price. Those steps included creating a holding company and a listing on an American exchange by one of its arms.

A Samsung move to restructure could ease some of those concerns, according to Sanford C. Bernstein & Company, a research and brokerage firm.

Although that effort won the backing of international investors, it also earned Elliott the moniker “vulture capitalist” within South Korea, where large family-run companies, known as chaebol, often fiercely resist outside intervention.

This time, however, things could be different. The company has taken a softer tone, and in the announcement on Tuesday, Samsung seemed to have addressed most of the points in Elliott’s letter, though it stopped short of committing to a full-on restructuring. Instead it said that it had “retained external advisers to conduct a thorough review of the optimal corporate structure,” which would take six months.

In its letter, Elliott argued that the company should divide itself into two publicly traded companies: a holding company that serves as the Lee family’s main ownership vehicle, and a separate company that would hold the electronics business.
